At the end of December 2024, Stg.Babel Food Resort launched the project “Establishing a sustainable soap production facility” for the women of the villages of Kwakoegron, Commisariskondre, and Makakiki. The project will be financed for one year by the Schmidt Foundation in Germany. Our partner in Germany, which acts as the liaison to the Schmidt Foundation, is the association Aulaterra e.V..
The project's goal is for the women to make soap using medicinal herbs that grow in their immediate surroundings. The money raised from selling the soap will help them to have another source of income alongside their farming work.
A preparatory meeting took place at the end of January 2025. The start of the project had been delayed due to several deaths. Here in Suriname, the stages of mourning are traditionally defined and most Maroon families live according to them.
The women received detailed information about the course of the project, the donors, and the other participants.

Our preparatory meeting took place in the community center in Commissariskondre. The women were given detailed information about the project. They were given the opportunity to ask questions. After the event, we ate together and some took the boat to Kwakoegron.
